There are many different options to choose from when trying to select a romantic place to visit in Europe. Of these, some of the most impressive include locations that have long held a reputation for exceptional sights, as well as for romantic dining and shopping.

However, and while cities like Rome and Paris arguably rank at the top of most destination lists for couples, other cities and areas like Prague, Bruges, Santorini, and Dublin also come recommended as places for a weekend or longer stay. The most romantic places to visit in Europe, listed in no particular order, consequently include:

1 – Prague

This city in the Czech Republic is notable for its low costs, and for its winding cobbled streets, art galleries, and boutique hotels. Prague is particularly ideal for a Winter visit, and can be easily navigated by foot.

2 – Rome

The Eternal City is a favourite with couples for many reasons – the old part of Rome contains a wide range of different historical sights, while the rest of the city offers opportunities to immerse yourself in fine dining, museums, and high quality shopping.

3 – Bruges

Located in Belgium, Bruges is another relatively inexpensive cities that is distinguished by its romantic medieval centre, which contains Gothic churches, chocolate shops, and cafes. Recommended times for visits include December, when Christmas markets are held on the streets and squares of the city.

4 – Santorini

Found within the Cyclades off the coast of Greece, the island of Santorini represents an excellent escape, with beautiful sunsets, volcanic islets, and remote beaches to enjoy. The main village of Oia is typically the first stop on journeys to the island.

5 – Capri

A luxurious island off the coast of Italy, Capri is a regular destination for the rich and famous, and represents a hotspot for boutique hotels and villas. The town of Anacapri offers unbeatable views over the Bay of Naples, while the rest of the island includes ancient buildings and grottos.

6 – Paris

Difficult to leave off this list for its romantic past, Paris has everything you need for a weekend or longer – famous sights like the Eiffel Tower, cathedrals, the markets and the shops of the Left Bank and the Latin Quarter, and miles and miles of museums and restaurants.

7 – Barcelona

From the busy shopping area of Las Ramblas, through to waterfront bars and sandy beaches, the Catalan capital of Barcelona has long been a favourite Mediterranean destination for couples looking to soak in the sun off the coast of Spain.

8 – Venice

Widely regarded as one of the most romantic locations in Europe, if not the world, Venice allows for a beautiful weekend away with a loved one. From its much adored gondola ride for two to it’s fantastic choice of luxury accommodation, it is the ideal place to visit for a long weekend.

9 – Amsterdam

Ideal for a quick weekend away, Amsterdam has museums, great shopping, and more unusual sights and experiences that can be found in the city’s coffee houses.

10 – Dublin

This compact Irish city has a thriving nightlife, most of which is based around Trinity College, as well as world class museums and shopping, with the latter focused on Grafton Street. Visitors can also explore the ancient Trinity College in the centre of the city, and take a walk along the Liffey to Dublin Castle.

This Austrian city is home to medieval squares and streets, as well as cathedrals, palaces, modern art museums, and coffee houses for spending long afternoons unwinding.
