The city of Beja is surrounded by golden fields of wheat and olive trees as far as the eye can see. Se Catedral – Beja

Beja has been known since the Roman times when Julius Cesar himself proclaimed the city as the capital of the entire region. Nearby in Pisões, you will find the ancient Roman ruins that are testament to the importance of Beja in Roman history. You will also find that the city is home to a beautiful castle which dates back to the Roman times.

The vast majority of the buildings and architecture that is Beja today was brought when the Moors arrived;during the 8th century. Today, the cobblestone paths, narrow streets and whitewashed homes throughout the city adds a certain enchantment to this ancient city along the Atlantic coast.

There are many museums in the city which are home to countless relics of the past. Many of them house artifacts that date back to Roman times, however, the vast majority of the collections are much younger and often reflect the middle ages.
