Belvoir is a French word that means beautiful and it made a first introduction into the world during the Norman times. Just to be precise, it is pronounced like the word “Beaver”. Belvoir Castle was built and altered for several different centuries; the Anglo Saxons had a mission to master the French language.

For thousands of years the Duke and Duchess of Rutland have occupied the castle, and they still do until this very day. They are currently a family of 11 with five children.

Belvoir Castle, England, UK

The Belvoir Castle is known to have been the 4th castle to stand built during the Norman times. The castle was finished during the early 19th century after some of the construction had suffered from some destruction during the Wars of Roses, the fire, and the Civil War that happened in 1816.

Belvoir is known to have one of the most impressive interiors and some of the most popular rooms include the Elizabeth Saloon, Regents Gallery, and the State Dining Room. When browsing the kitchen you will feel a sense of what it was like to smell and see baked foods being prepared during 1825.

There are several different paintings and art pieces that dwell inside the Belvoir Castle. The furniture, porcelain items, and the tapestries are known to be some of the finest things to be observed in the castle.

During the year of 1799, the fifth Duchess, Elizabeth took on the job of designing the gardens around the castle while James Wyatt started the building of the actual castle itself.
