In the north eastern part of Portugal, among the highlands, at the edge of the Montesinho Natural Park you will find the quaint town of Bragança. The locals in this town still observe many of the old traditions that have been practiced in Portugal for centuries. Life today is almost the exact same as it has been for hundreds of years in many of the small and isolated villages around Bragança. Because of the rich traditions of the area, the annual carnival celebrations are some of the most amazing events to be experienced in the country.
Overlooking the city of Bragança, you will find the old Cidadela which stands today much as it did back in the 14th century when it underwent a number of renovations which included reinforcing the fortified walls, the construction of the keep and the Santa Maria church. However, the citadel was originally built by Benedictine monks back in the 12th century.
During the 16th century, the Sé Catedral was built and occupied by Jesuit priests. They even founded a college on the site. However, it would not be declared a cathedral until 1764.It is a popular attraction for many visitors who make their way to Bragança every single year. Near by the Cathederal, is the Museu do Abade de Baçal which is a museum that features an extensive collection of ancient artifacts dating back to the Roman times and beyond.
For that rest and relaxation you have been seeking, spend your days at the 75,000 hectare Parque Natural de Montesinho. At more than 1,500 meters above sea level, this natural park has a lot to offer anyone who wants to just get away from the hustle and bustle of living in a big city. While trekking through the wilderness, you may come across several old villages which still remain today among the dense fauna in the park.
