Brod Fortress – a monumental and unique example of the art and heritage
Slavonski Brod is one of the important cities in Croatia, because it is located on the border of turkey. Most of the traffic between these countries is going through this city. This historic position of the city remains the same throughout the past. And this is why it was really important to build a fort here.
The work on Brod fortress started in 1715 and was completed in 1780. This fort was built on the bank of the river Sava. There are four types of material used for the construction of this fort, which includes wood, partially stone, rammed earth and bricks. It is thought that it could accommodate about 4000 soldiers.

When the fort was built here it was divided into three parts and an external defence zone that was used as the first defence line. The three other parts are the internal part, southern part and the central part.
It was divided to make it easier to defence and also to divide the responsibility of work. The most important of all these parts is the external defense area, because this acts as a first blockage in way of marching enemy. It is the main source of protecting the main wall of the fort from any external threat.
Nowadays if you look at this Brod fortress, you can see it as a monumental and unique example of the art and heritage of the 18th century. There are certain changes and maintenance that have also been done by the concerned authorities to make it more attractive and beautiful for the visitors. This fort also plays a major role in the foreign earning as many people visit Croatia just to see this fort.
