Croatia – Península de Istria

The area that Buje is located in has been inhabited since the Paleolithic Era with the remains of a Neolithic man being found in a cave.

It has survived the countless onslaught of wars over the years and as a result, has proven to be a more culturally diverse and mysterious place to visit.

All over the countryside, one can find a number of castles, old Roman roads, Venetian palaces, medieval churches and many other ancient structures that have stood the test of times.

There are also many ruins scattered across the territory that tell the tale of one horrific battle after another that the inhabitants of the area had to endure.

The first structures built in the area that can still be found today date back to the Bronze Age. Today, a total of 20 such structures have been discovered throughout the territory.

Up until the time of the Romans, the people of Istria lived in safety behind the walls of citadels that were scattered across the countryside.

Some of these disappeared over the years while others flourished into the towns and villages of today.

The largest expansion in the region occurred during the middle ages when a great number of walls, towers, houses and palaces were constructed.
