Caister-on-Sea, commonly referred to as Caister, is a historic village in Norfolk dating back to around the year 200 AD. The name Caister is derived from the Latin word “Castra” which means fortress. The Romans settled the area and built a fort here to have a main base for navy and army units.

During the 1950’s, there was a building excavated at the south gate. It is believed that what was discovered appears to be an officer’s house or a “seaman’s hostel’, (a more polite, proper name for a brothel), since the buildings do not appear as though they are standard military buildings for that time.

150 Saxon burials were discovered and it appears as though the building was abandoned sometime within the fifth century. The remains excavated are open to public for those who like to get a glimpse of what was once a Roman fortress.

A famous phrase, “Caister men never turn back”, refers to nine men who lost their lives in 1901 while attempting to save a boat in distress in heavy seas. Giving up on the rescue and going back was simply not an option. In honor of these men, a monument was placed in the Caister cemetery. Since 1791, a lifeboat has been offshore in the area. Its purpose is to salvage ships wrecked on the sand banks.

Today, Caister-on-Sea is a very busy, very popular seaside resort on the “Golden Mile” just outside of Great Yarmouth. One of the main attractions to this cozy village is its sandy “Georgian Beach” and his home to the Great Yarmouth race course which features greyhound racing and stockcar racing.

One of the oldest Holiday Haven Tourist Parks can be found at the sea. In 1906 it was called the “Social Club of Great Yarmouth”, but was later sold. In the 1980’s a new park was opened and then sold in the 1990’s.

Visitors enjoy grassy dunes on wide unspoiled sandy beaches, shops, cafes, restaurants, pubs, and supermarkets. Popular holiday centres, caravan, and chalet parks attract hundreds of holiday travelers year after year. Caister-on-Sea is the perfect holiday destination for those who like to do their own thing at their own pace.

Caister-on-Sea is a popular resort for tourists to stay in Norfolk due to its many local Caravan Parks, Bed and Breakfasts and local Hotels. More information can be found at the below link:
