Located between the Eden River and Caldew River, Carlisle Castle is the best preserved castle in Cumbria. During I to IV century on the site was stationed the Roman Luguvalium garrison.
Located on the border of England and Scotland, Carlisle was ruled by Scotland until 1092 and then the control was taken by William II (Rufus), who conquered it with his army. In order to establish his power in Carlisle, he started the building of Carlisle Castle and settled the region with Englishmen.
Since then the castle was rules by many Scottish and English kings. Nowadays, the amazing castle still preserves the ancient glory of all of them. Every king who captured the castle has added his own vision about its fortifications, towers and walls.

The castle keep is the oldest survival part of the castle, but it’s not the only interesting thing that you can see there. This English Heritage offers many fantastic and powerful towers, barracks, halls, royal house and chapel.
There is also located the Regimental Museum where you can enjoy many different exhibitions on interesting themes, mostly medieval armory and traditions.
