Castle Drogo was built between the years of 1910 and 1930. It was built for Julius Drewe who was a millionaire that had a line of Home and Colonial stores which allowed him to retire a bit earlier than what most people would.
He retired in the year of 1899 and that is when the construction of the castle was planned out.
The castle is located just above the Teign Gorge and it is made up of mostly granite. Castle Drogo is known as the last castle that has been built in England according to those that have studied all of the castles in this particular area.
It has come to a determination that Drewe found the land that he wanted to build the castle on when it was owned by a Norman Baron Drogo de Teign.

When Drewe’s 55th birthday approached is when the laying of the stone started for the construction of the castle. The entire construction process of the castle took about a total of 20 years to complete. Unfortunately, Drewe passed away about a year after the castle had finished being built; this was in 1930.
A few several years down the road, the Drewe family was in fear that there would be some sort of wealth tax charged for the castle. It all had to do with the very difficult times of the environment that people were facing in the 1970s.
Since it was considered to be a huge amount of maintenance for the grandparents that were living in the castle at the time, the family made the decision that it would be better to look for a home that would be easier to maintain.
