Dunrobin Castle is one of Scotland’s best castles of all time, and it is the largest castle in the Northern part of Scotland, with a total of 189 rooms. It is also considered to be one of the oldest inhabited castles in Scotland.

There has always been a family living in it throughout its time. The castle dates all the way back to the 1300’s and was first home to the Earls. It then later became the home of the Dukes of Sutherland.

The tower features conical spires, and the architecture of it was influenced by Charles Barry. He had previously designed the London’s Houses of Parliament. During the First World War the hospital was used as a Naval hospital and as a boarding school for boys; this was between the year of 1965-1972.

During the year of 1850 is when the garden was created, and it was finished by Sir Charles Barry. This English architect was also asked for working on the extension of the Castle to the Parliament House. The Gardens and Grounds have been designed according to the gardens around Palace of Versailles in Paris. There has been little change to it within the past 150 years. Even though the location is to the north, there are a variety of different types of plants that are able to still survive in the climate. At the beginning of the garden steps is a great group of Gunnera plants. This is Native American South rhubarb which has eight foot leaves all over it.

Dunrobin Castle is open from the late March up to the half of October. The dates and times vary so you should check the times before your arrival on the official website of Dunrobin Castle. The basic admission is £10 for adults and a half for children. You can visit falconry display, gardens as well as a castle museum. You can even come by car as there is a carpark with a capacity of 200 cars available for you.
