The Durham Cathedral is known by many to be one of the greatest architectural designs in Europe. It is a very high quality built masterpiece that can only be appreciated to the max by those that see it upfront and in person.

The architect that it has been designed with is known to be Norman or Romanesque architecture. The designing of the building started in 1093 and it took over 40 years for it to be completed.

It is England’s only cathedral to obtain the majority of the same craftsmanship design this very day with little to no changes. This is one of the main reasons that it is appreciated by many more than other cathedrals in England.

Durham Cathedral was built for the same purpose as many of the other cathedrals, as a place for worship. It was also known as the house of the shrine Cuthbert.

In his honor there were many Pilgrims that would come to visit the cathedral.

The Durham Cathedral was also once the home of St. Benedict and Benedictine monasticism. Each year the cathedral is a place of an event known as the annual Benedictine Weekend which gives many the opportunity to explore the history and the facts of the St Benedict traditions.

The event focuses on the things of the past and the present in history of the cathedral.

There were also times when the cathedral would serve as a military function for protection against enemies in various wars that occurred near the premises.

Visiting the city of Durham is really a good idea as along with the Durham Cathedral you can also visit great Durham Castle located nearby.

Those sights were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986. Durham Cathedral was also used in a film of Harry Potter, where the film makers digitally added tall spires onto the towers of the Cathedral.

You can also see that Cathedral in one part of the Britain’s Best Buildings documentary series made by BBC.

The Durham Cathedral is open daily and is accessible for free. For more information about that great Cathedral visit official site: durhamcathedral.co.uk
