Elizabeth Castle was built on the rocks of small islet situated in Saint Aubin’s Bay. The Castle is known to have defended Jersey (the largest island of the Channel Islands) for over 300 years.

The only time the castle is accessible by foot is when it is low tide. However when the water rises visitors will have to reach the castle by form or Castle Ferry transportation. You will be transported across the bay to castle and back to your destination in the Ferry once you have finished your tour.

If you are highly interested in exploring the history of Jersey then the Elizabeth Castle is definitely a place to do it. The construction of the Elizabeth Castle first started out in the early 1590s. The Castle was a home to Sir Walter Raleigh during the time that he was Governor over Jersey, and that was about from 1600-1603. During the English Civil War, King Charles II used the castle as a place of refuge. It also served as a place of refuge during the occupation by Germans. The castle was later on remodelled to be used as a battle shield. You will have the opportunity to explore the Hermitage where it was said that St. Helier lived in 550 AD.

Just visiting the castle one time will help you to see the reason as to why it was constructed with such defensive features. It is certainly one of the most protected castles of all time. No wonder King Charles II sought out refuge there.

The Ferry to get to the castle runs on a daily basis, except for days when there are high winds; you will pay a small fee of £3 to ride the Ferry and £12 if you wish to access the castle as well. The castle is open daily from April to October.
