Königstein Fortress can be found in the Saxony region close to Dresden. This is by far the largest fortress in all of Germany.

It is more than 750 years old and represents many different types of architecture, including the Baroque, Renaissance, and Gothic styles. This is a hilltop fortress which sits just about the town of Konigstein.

Königstein Fortress sits on a large rock plateau and has a total of 50 different buildings, some of which are older than 400 years. There are guided tours of this fortress available to the public for those who are interested at 4 Euros per person.

These tours take vacationers from around the world all throughout the fortress grounds, exploring the magnificent buildings that have been around for centuries.

For centuries this particular fortress was actually used as a prison and is still completely intact unlike many fortresses that are just as old but in much worse shape. By the year 1922 this fortress was the most well-known prison in all of Saxony, keeping thousands of inmates at a time.

This fortress attracts hundreds of thousands of people per year from places all around the world. It is considered to be one of Germany’s most famous tourist attractions.

With over 50 buildings and a remarkable surrounding landscape, this fortress is world renowned for being one of the oldest and most historically significant structures in Germany with regards to castles and fortresses.
