Frankfurt is the fifth-largest city in Germany and sits on an ancient ford on the river Main. The city is considered to be the largest financial centre in continental Europe and transportation centre of Germany and therefore Frankfurt airport is one of the world’s busiest. The stock exchange in Frankfurt is one of the world’s most important and has established the city as a vital financial centre.
One of the most popular attractions in Frankfurt is Saint Bartholomew’s Cathedral. It is a gothic building which dates back to the 14th century and is the main church in Frankfurt. Tourists also flock to Saint Paul’s Church which was partially destroyed during World War II and was rebuilt in a more modern fashion. The church is no longer used for religious ceremonies but mostly for exhibitions and events.

The Zeil is Frankfurt’s busiest and most popular shopping street and is fully pedestrianized, bordered by two large plazas. Rental of shops on this street is understandably sky high and during the month leading up to Christmas, the street is transformed into a Christmas market that is loved by locals and tourists alike.
Frankfurt is the only German city to boast a significant number of skyscrapers (buildings at least 150 metres tall): a symbol of its status in the worldwide financial market. There are 11 skyscrapers in total, the tallest being Commerzbank Tower which stands at 259m tall. This makes it not only the tallest building in Frankfurt but it was also the tallest building in Europe from 1997-2003.
