Grožnjan is perhaps one of the most magical cities in Istria. It has become known over the years as being the city of artists; and for good reason too. The surrounding emerald green hillsides are blanketed feature pure white soil. There is history to be discovered in every corner of the city which makes Grožnjan a must-see place in Istria.

You will find an assortment of ancient churches, medieval castles and palaces in Grožnjan. Just outside the city, where the white soil blankets the hillsides, olives grown naturally and green vineyards produce some of the finest wines in Istria. There is a certain charm to Grožnjan which is unmistakably Mediterranean.

There are a number of taverns, restaurants and pubs throughout the city where one can taste the fine wine and unique cuisine of Istria. The city is also the home to many of the national artists and several internationally renowned artists. You will find in the city, an art gallery with works from all over the globe as well as the renowned Imaginary Film Academy. Classical and Jazz music can be heard in most corners of the city as it is also home to a number of well-known musicians.

The history of Grožnjan can be dated back to prehistoric times as there have been a number of important artefacts uncovered over the years. Perhaps the most visible structures of ancient times in the area are those erected by the Roman Empire, some of which still stand today. During the Middle Ages, Grožnjan was the centre of many battles for power. Throughout the 14th century, much of the remaining structures were restored for the first time which is why so many have lasted through the centuries. All of these ancient treasures of course, are waiting for you to discover them for the first time.
