The charming coastal town of Lagos is the perfect destination for many visitors who want to soak in the sun along the Portuguese shoreline. Lagos played a crucial role in maritime history with many grand voyages of discovery having commenced within its port over the years. In nearby Sagres, Henry the Navigator built his navigational school which attracted many mariners to the area. Many famous explorers called Lagos home including Gil Eanes who was the first to ever travel around the tip of Cape Bojador and return in one piece.

Today however, the city is known more for its charming beaches and long stretches of natural sand dunes which line the shores of the region. There are several popular beaches for water sport enthusiasts to choose from when staying in Lagos. One of the best is definitely Dona Ana Beach. For the family or the romantic couple, the many smaller beaches that are more secluded are home to many beautiful grottoes and rock pools.

Every day of the year, one can catch a scenic coastal tour by boats that are available in the marina. Whether you want to see the coast, head out into the deep blue for some fishing, or plan on going scuba diving, you will find many charters in the marina.

However, when it comes to discovering the town of Lagos, it is always best to put on a goof pair of shoes and visit it on foot. While much of the region was devastated by the 1755 earthquake, many of the older homes in the city center managed to survive and still stand today as a testament of the workmanship of the day. There are numerous bars, restaurants, bakeries and other shops located throughout the city. As you walk down the cobblestone streets you will feel as if you have stepped back in time.

You will be able to experience many of the fine delicacies that Lagos has to offer. From beans to stews and of course the local clams, there is so much to try and experience in this coastal town. If you are looking for a little bit of night life, do not worry because this is one city that offers a very lively bar and club scene all year long.

As you walk along through the city you will come across the Igreja de Santo António which was built back in the 18th century as well as the 14th century Igreja de São Sebastião which is home to a wonderful 18th century Brazilian statue of Our Lady of Glory and a 16th century crucifix that was used during the infamous Alcácer-Quibir battle.

Around the old town center, you will find the Muralhas which are from the Roman times. These town walls were extended in the 14th and 16th centuries to include ramparts and in order to sustain the growth of the town throughout the years. In the center you will find the 14th century Castelo dos Governadores, which was built upon the foundations of an ancient Arab castle. Europe’s first slave market can be found in Lagos; the Mercado de Escravos was built back in 1444.

There is much history to be explored in Lagos which is why so many people come to this ancient city every single year. Rest and relax along the beautiful beaches, take a hike into the untamed countryside or simply spend your days wandering around the town and seeing the sites.
