Located near the coastline, you will find the sleepy little town of Peniche. If you like deep sea fishing and want to charter a boat and capture a monster of a fish, then this is one of the best places in Portugal to go. You can choose from many fine seafood restaurants in the town which offer some local delicacies. For some rest and relaxation, catch the ferry out the Berlenga Islands and enjoy a peaceful day in the sun.
Not too far away, you will find another peaceful fishing village called Nazaré. This village is well known in the district for its golden beaches. Today many fishermen still cast net from the beach every single day. Here you will be able to explore the town’s old medieval castle and cathedral. That dates back to the 12th century.
In nearby Caldas da Rainha you can get your hands on some of the finest ceramic crafts in Portugal, while in Marinha Grande, you will find the largest glass manufacturer in the country. You can even stop by and check out the 14th century castle in the small village of Óbidos.
The Fortaleza de Peniche is a popular attraction in the area. This fort was built back in 1645 and would eventually be decommissioned. However, during the First World War, it was used as a detention camp by the Germans and Austrians. Later during the dictatorship, the fortress would function as a prison for dissidents.
There is the 17th century Igreja da Misericórdia which is home to more than 55 paintings which depict various scenes from the New Testament. The 14th century Mosteiro da Batalha has some of the most amazing stained glass windows that depict a number of important biblical scenes. Then there is the Mosteiro de Alcobaça monastery which stands today in ruins but is none the less a site that is to be visited by everyone.
