You will find the territory of Ližnjan located at the southernmost tip of the Istrian peninsula. The lush green rolling hills are filled with a fresh sea breeze all year long. Ližnjan boasts a coastline that is just over 28 kilometers in length. The fresh Mediterranean climate makes visiting any of the beaches in Ližnjan a splendid treat no matter what time of the year it is.
The history of Ližnjan dates back to the prehistoric times with the oldest still standing settlements dating back more than 7,000 years into the past. There are Roman villa spread out across the coastline and many wrecks in the waters just waiting to be explored. You will find old and ancient light houses, churches, castles and so much more.
The ancient settlement of Kargadur was only recently discovered along the shores of Ližnjan and it dates back 7,000 years. Volcanic glass, hooks, jewelry and so much more was found within this settlement and while today it is in ruins, it is still none the less an awe inspiring site to visit.
The earliest recorded information of Ližnjan can date back to 990 A.D. when a rural villa by the name of Liciniana existed in the area. However, the artifacts uncovered in the region truly tell the tale of the age of the region. As most of the region, Ližnjan was passed from one ruler to the next for most of the last few millennia until it finally fell under Croatian control only a few decades ago. There are several churches from the 17th and 18th centuries that one can visit as well as a prehistoric fort complete with two ramparts nearby. There are several lighthouses that are centuries old and still signal ships and warn them that they are getting close to the Ližnjan shoreline.
