One of the unforgettable treasures of Croatia is certainly Lonjsko Polje Nature Park. It represents the largest protected wetland area not only in Croatia but also throughout the Danube basin. This natural area offers an unusual experience of the hidden corners of Croatian nature, especially for those expecting a lot from the natural park – fans of biology, botanists and ornithologists. Lonjsko Polje Nature Park is a paradise for lovers of unusual nature and its plant and animal mysteries.

Lonjsko polje is one of the most vulnerable destinations worldwide. Park was included in the List of Ramsar wetlands of international importance. The park itself consists of three fields: Lonjsko polje, Mokro Polje and Poganovo Polje.

Lonjsko polje is a part of the flooded valley between the river Sava and Moslavačka Gora on the river Lonja. Since this area is a meeting point of five rivers (Sava, Una, Lonj, Kupa and Strug), the risk of flooding is unpredictable in any season.

This nature park is open to the public since 1998 and is situated about 100 km away from the capital city of Zagreb. Its information Center is located in the village Čigoč.

The main purpose of this natural area is the protection of basic natural and cultural heritage and its preservation.

Lonjsko polje offers the diversity of plant and animals. There are almost 240 kinds of birds with two globally threatened species – White-tailed Eagle and the Corncrake, but also rare European bird species such as Black stork and Lesser Spotted Eagle. Lonjsko Polje has become home to many species of birds of prey (hawks, falcons, misyar, and others). Wetland meadows and willows are valuable nests for ducks.

The territory of the park is covered by forests that are continually flooded, then by wet grassland and pastures and in the early summer there are lots of colorful flowers and water lilies.

You can find here also a couple of charming wooden houses that fabulously fit into the landscape. You would not believe how much beauty and surprises are waiting for you in such a wonderful place.
