Malbork is famous for having the biggest gothic castle in Europe. It was built by Teutonic Knights, who are a German Roman Catholic religious order of crusaders, and is a classic example of a medieval fortress.

The castle is now a museum, home to historical artefacts about Malbork castle and the town of Malbork itself. As well as exhibitions spread across all four areas of the castle — including exhibitions of the day-to-day life, medieval heating systems, the infirmary, bedrooms, Grand Master’ chapels and churches — there are frequent open-air and live spectacles.

Most notable of these is The Siege of Malbork, which started in the year 2000 and is one of Europe’s biggest historical outdoor spectacles. Every year at the end of July, knights set out for Malbork to reenact the siege of Malbork by King Jagiello over 600 years ago. This huge event combines entertainment with education, showing serious events in an enjoyable form so that visitors can learn about the history of the castle but enjoy themselves doing it.

There are a few cafes and restaurants inside the castle itself which serve lovely food, and three shops that allow you to buy all the souvenirs you could wish for. There are also hotels inside the castle grounds, ranging from budget to three stars — a perfect place to stay if you wanted to try one of the castle’s famous night tours. However if you’d prefer you can camp or get a hotel from outside the castle grounds.
