Manchester is a city or bough in the United Kingdom. It lies in the “Greater Manchester Urban Area” of England. It is located in the South Central part of the UK.

Manchester was founded back in around 79AD on a bluff near the Medlock and Irwell rivers. It started as just a small place in the middle of two different areas, and has expanded and grew rapidly to where it now houses around 500,000 people.

Manchester is known for many things such as architecture, culture, music, and social impact. One of the biggest things Manchester is known for is it’s Football (or soccer in the western world) team “Manchester United”. However, Manchester should be known for some of its several inventions and discoveries.

Top Scientific Breakthroughs and Discoveries

Railway Stations – Not many people know it, but Manchester was the site of one of the world’s FIRST railway stations, which gave birth to the modern transportation model of passenger and freight trains.

Splitting Atoms – Again, another not so remarkable fact that goes unnoticed is that Manchester was the very first place where scientists split atoms apart and created the very first “stored-program” computer.

In reality there are a lot of things that Manchester is famous for besides their sports, just they are not given the proper credit for their discoveries and upbringing.

Manchester also serves as a hub to other parts of the United Kingdom; the Manchester Airport is the 3rd largest airport in the entire United Kingdom, just behind the London Airports.

This airport is still considered a “Regional Airport” however it serves as a major hub in the region. The airport also connects its residents with other countries around the world such as the United States, Caribbean’s, Africa, and Asia.

Manchester was also the first city in the United Kingdom to acquire a passenger train operation. In the years 2008 and 2009 the Manchester rail line was the busiest rail line in the entire United Kingdom and has lead way to some of the best innovations in the rail line system.

Manchester is a relatively “Mild and Cool” region to visit. So if you plan on visiting the area, make sure you do it in the summer months (July – September). The average temperatures in the region don’t get more than 20°C and that is in the summer months, so be sure to dress mildly even if going in the summer months.

If you are planning on visiting in the winter months or even late fall months you will want to pack heavily, because the average lows in the area are in the teens and single digits.
