There is quite a bit of history behind the castle known as Alte Burg Meersburg which is the oldest inhabited castle in all of Germany. Referred to by many as “the old castle”, it was built in the 7th century and is also known simply as Alte Burg.

This castle is located in Meersburg right on Lake Constance. The central tower of this castle was erected in the 7th century, though you can no longer see the original structure. The Burg Meersburg got the name of “the old castle” because of the nearby castle which is referred to as “the new castle”.

Located around 440 meters above sea level, this castle looms over the Lower City though it is on about the same level as the rest of the city. You will find that this one of the most famous castles in the entire world because of the fact that it is the oldest castle still inhabited by people today. There are regular tours that go on throughout the castle and they cost only 8 Euros per person.

This tour will allow you to go through 30 different rooms in the castle, including the chambers which are known for being used by famous German poets and others. During the early 19th century many people stayed in the castle Alte Burg and it certainly has an interesting history associated with it. If you are going to be visiting in this area of Germnay, Meersburg Alte Burg is a must-see attraction.
