The city of Monchique is situated in the mountain range which shares its name and is covered with enchanted forests, natural springs and the aroma of countless orchards. Nearby you will also find a number of secluded beaches which simply beckons you to come and relax along the shores.

The landscape is truly something that has to be experienced. While there are some amazing beaches nearby, it is the lush rolling hills, flowing streams and forests which make Monchique most attractive. Most people that visit the region know only about the many great resort towns located along the coasts, but very few make their way to the inner portions of this beautiful portion of Portugal. The area that surrounds Monchique is even known locally as the Garden of Algarve and for good reason too.

There are a multitude of hiking trails that meander their way into the countryside in all directions from the city. As you walk along you will find the magnificent granite rocks that the mountain is composed of. You can even walk all the way up to the peak of Mt. Fóia; 902 meters above sea level. From up there, you can see some of the most amazing panoramic views of the entire Algarve region of Portugal.

This is not a busy resort town, but rather is a peaceful place where anyone can unwind and relax in the arms of natures caress. All around there are hamlets which still today follow the traditions that have been part of the local culture for centuries. From fruits to vegetables, there are many great farms in the area and much of the regions finest alcohol is made in Monchique.

The old world charm can be seen throughout the city. The narrow cobblestone streets are lined with whitewashed homes buildings and there are cafes and taverns located throughout the city. The local cuisine is none the less than perfect and of course handicrafts can be found on every street corner. You will find a wide variety of locally made goods that are unique to this region of Portugal.

There are several major events held in Monchique every single year. The Feira dos Enchidos Tradicionais is a sausage festival that is held every single March and the Feira do Presunto is a smoked ham fair that is held every July. There are several produce shows held throughout the year as well.

The region where Monchique sits today has been inhabited since the days of the Romans who visited the area for its natural springs; which stay at a constant 32° C all year long. Today these hot springs are sought after for their healing powers. It is known today that just sitting around the springs can help to alleviate many respiratory disorders.

For those who want to see the older structures in Monchique, there is the Igreja Matriz de Monchique which was built back in the 15th century and is adorned by some of the most impressive tiles imaginable. Nearby you will find the Núcleo de Arte Sacra de Monchique which houses a number of priceless religious artifacts. The Convento de Nossa Senhora do Desterro is a 17th century convent that was devastated by the 1755 earthquake. Then of course there is the 16th century Igreja de São Sebastião.

For the nature lovers though, take the time to visit the peak of Mt. Fóia where it is said to be possible for one to see from Faro all the way to Cape St. Vincent. The peak is 902 meters above sea level but can be easily reached by anyone; even if you are not in the best shape. On the other side of Monchique, you can check out Mt. Picota which is only 774 meters above the sea. There is an old watermill that was once used to grind cereal which can be found in Barranco dos Pisões as well as an 18th century farmhouse which can be found in Parque da Mina.

You will find many things to see and do when you visit Monchique. From the peaks of the tallest mountains in the areas to the golden beaches that line the coast, you will never run out of things to occupy your time.
