If you ever have the pleasure of visiting Mystras you will be left in no doubt why it was chosen as the perfect site to put up castles and generally just turn the whole area in to a fortress.
The natural surroundings of beautiful hills and gorges were not always so beautiful, for invaders that is, as they formed the base of an impressively defended and fortified city.
The atmosphere of Mystras is much more welcoming in the present day, particularly in the Spring and Summer months, and there is little chance of being caught up in siege warfare.
Greece is a real treasure trove for history buffs and basically anyone who enjoys walking among the ruins of past civilizations and of course Mystras will not disappoint in those areas, and it is easy to see why this place was mistaken for Sparta by early travelers.
There are a few small guesthouses, sometimes referred to as a bed & breakfast, which are very popular with visitors. Guesthouse Mazaraki is one such popular guesthouse, and just about everyone who stays there never wants to leave, but you must plan ahead with these small establishments as they are obviously very limited on how many guests they can accommodate at any one time.
Actually there aren’t any large hotels to be found here, with the Byzantion Hotel probably being the largest, and even that is a family run affair so I really can’t stress enough how important it is to plan ahead when visiting the smaller attractions such as Mystras.
