In the central most portion of Istria, one can find the quaint village of Pićan. Because the municipality is located along the Pazin-Kršan-Vozilići regional road and the railway, getting to Pićan is an easy task.
The history of the area can be dated back to the Roman times in which the areas was a Roman stronghold that had become known as Petina. When the first diocese opened in Istria, Pićan became the seat of the church and maintained its place from the 5th century all the way through until the 18th century.

By the medieval times, Pićan had transformed into a commune which was home to many officers and governors of the region. One of the oldest still standing structures in the city are the town gates which were built back in the 14th or 15th century and still stands today; fully preserved. There are many spots of historical importance located within the city’s walls.
In the center of Pićan, one can find a church with three naves that was built back in 1738 upon the foundation of a previous cathedral. Most of the bishops from the region have been buried in the naves since its erection in the early 18th century. Towering above the church, one will find a 48 meter high bell tower which is considered to be the third tallest in Istria. From the top of this tower, one can see the beautiful Istrian countryside in all directions.
There are many great places to see in Pićan. For some of the most amazing views, make your way to;the bell tower and seu the surrounding vineyards and olive groves that dot the hills all around. Take you time to taste the local cuisine before checking out the historical ruins in this ancient Istrian village of antiquity.
