Made up of many individual mountains that stretch all the way from Albania to central Greece, the Pindos Mountain Range is a massive sprawling wilderness that covers hundreds of kilometres and includes several designated national parks such as Valia kalda and Voidomatis river.

This mountain range really could be considered as a “one stop shop” when it comes to the varying climates and landscapes which range from high mountain peaks to gorges and alpine lakes. The animal and plant species here are just as diverse, and some dangerous or even deadly to humans, so due care is needed as with any other wilderness.

Obviously if you plan on exploring the Pindos Mountain Range to it’s full extent you will have to be ready to walk a lot, or ski if that is more your style, and it is also possible to hire a guide either from one of the many small villages around the mountains or from larger nearby cities.

Hiring a car from Athens, which is probably the cheapest city to rent from, is one of the recommended starting points for your journey.

Visitors who arrive in mid April to June will be presented with arguably the best conditions for hiking and just getting around in general. There may still be lingering snow on the ground during April but this is still the time when a wide variety of wildflowers and greenery are coming out to play. September and October are also great times to visit to take in the autumn colors.
