Plitvice Lakes National Park (Nacionalni park Plitvička jezera) date back to 1949, although a protected area was declared here a few years earlier, already in 1932. This national park is characterized by its uniqueness in the world, and has been fairly inscribed on the UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
Plitvice Lakes National Park are among the most popular tourist attractions in Croatia, and perhaps the most beautiful one. Plitvice Lakes are situated on the main route leading to the coastal Croatia between the capital city of Zagreb and popular seaside town of Zadar (one of the most popular tourist destinations).
Plitvice Lakes National Park
National Park itself occupies an area of almost 300 square kilometers and it is therefore the largest national park in Croatia (Croatia has 8 national parks in total).
This area includes a breathtaking jewel stretching along nearly nine kilometers, and is formed by sixteen terraced emerald green turquoise lakes located at different altitudes. You can see here countless number of beautiful waterfalls.

There are lots of hiking trails prepared for hiking enthusiasts. You can walk through the winding wooden walkways and bridges that are located above the lakes. It is also possible to overlook the Plitvice Lakes from the tourist train, or by a more authentic way – a boat.
Plitvice Lakes are divided into two groups: Upper Lakes and Lower Lakes. Upper Lakes contain twelve lakes, including the largest one called Kozjak, with its total length of 2 km and a depth of 46 m.

From here the water is spilling over into the Lower Lakes – a set of four smaller and shallower lakes. The site is situated in the beautiful canyon created by the river. The largest waterfall is 72 metres high created by Plitvice stream.
The park features several impressive caves, twelve of them are available to the public. The best known are for example.: Golubinjača, Velika Pecina or Mračnjača.
Plitvice Lakes National Park is in addition to its beautiful natural scenery also proud of the movie about legendary Winnetou known as The Treasure of Silver Lake. The movie makers really couldn’t choose the better place for it.
The basic admission during the summer season is approx. 15Eur.
