The city of Pomer can be found nestled within a protected bay along the Istrian coastline. People who have visited the city year round enjoy their stay as the summer months offer the Mediterranean atmosphere that so many people seek, while the shade of the trees and the protection of the bay ensures that the winters are mild.

Pomer has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Near where the present city stands today, one can find the ruins of an ancient fortress whose job was to protect the shorelines of this enchanting bay. Under the foundations of the city are the ruins of pile houses built thousands of years ago by the ancestors of this quaint city.

During the Roman times, Pomer was ruled by the Aranum family who named the town Pomoerium and built in its borders, many luxurious baths, aqueducts and even a facility that produced fragrant oils that were traded throughout the region. From the Romans Empire to the Byzantine, Pomer maintained its status as a location for the production of fragrant oils and even wines. In the 6th century, a large Christian basilica was built upon the site of a Roman Villa and during the construction, several stone sarcophagi were unearthed; however no remains of them can be found today other than in writings of the time.

There are many great churches to visit in Pomer that were built during the 14th and 15th centuries. You will also find an ancient Byzantine building which has been turned into the Church of St. John which still stands today. The city is covered with archeological spots featuring ruins from the Roman and Byzantine Empires.

During the summer months, you can visit Pomer for the many great festivals and events that occur annually. Enjoy your days by the water or even go hiking through this ancient town and enjoy every minute of your vacation time in Pomer.
