If you are looking for the most popular tourist destinations in all of Istria, then look no further than Poreč. The city of Poreč has more than 2000 years of rich cultural heritage and history. It is the most visited location not just in Istria, but also in Croatia. The city life is simply amazing no matter what time of the year it is. There is simply so much for one to see and do in this rich town.

Originally called Colonia Iulia Parentium by the Romans, the actual history of the area can be dated back to prehistoric times with a number of important artifacts of the time having been unearthed. You can find one of Europe’s most well-preserved churches of the Byzantine Empire in Poreč. The Euphrasian Basilica Ws built back in the 6th century and still stands today. The three-nave church was built upon previous church which dated back to the Roman Era.

You will enjoy visiting the Pentagonal Tower that was built back in the 15th century. Built in the Gothic style by the Venetians, most of the tower and much of the city’s walls still stood intact even after the French Occupation.

One of the oldest ruins one can visit in Poreč are the Temple of Neptune and the Great Temple. Both were built back in the 1st century and have been well preserved over the years. There is something enchanting about visiting the ancient ruins. Poreč is also home to the largest Roman sanctuary in all of Istria where you will find many treasures dating back to the 1st century.

For the most part, Poreč did not have to deal with the destruction seen by most of Istria during the first and second world wars. As a result, so much of the city’s history has remained intact.
