During August, many people are visiting Portimão for their very lively Sardine Festival which occurs every single year. But regardless of the time of year, the nightlife in the city is simply amazing. While the town may seem like a quaint fishing village, things really pick up after the sun goes down. There are many clubs and bars that can be found all over the area and especially along the beaches.
There are many historical sites in town to see while you are here. Perhaps the most popular attraction is the Fortaleza de Santa Catarina which is a fortress that was built back in the 17th century as a means of protecting the locals from the onslaught of pirate attacks that were common place in the day. While it did sustain heavy damage during the big earthquake of 1755, most of the damage was repaired soon after.
