The island of Porto Santo was discovered by accident when the famous Portuguese explorers Tristão Vaz Teixeira and João Gonçalves Zarco were caught in a storm and blown off course. The explorers took shelter in the natural harbor where today stands the busting port town of Porto Santo.

Before Christopher Columbus set sail to the Americas, his home was in the nearby town of Vila Baleira. Here in the Porto Santo area, Columbus made his plans to travel to the new world. Casa de Cristóvão Colombo dates back to the 15th century and is thought to be the home of Columbus before his journey to America. Today, the home is a museum that attracts countless Americans every year who want to see how Columbus lived before discovering America. There are a number of ancient maps and sailing instruments of the time that can be seen in the museum.
The island itself was formed from volcanic activity. While not active today, many Picos can be seen all over the island, shooting to the heavens. From atop these Picos, one can see all over the island.

Access to the island is by boat or plane. By boat, one takes the almost 3 hour ferry ride from Funchal. The flight is only 15 minutes long but costs a lot more. While many people op-t to take the plane, choosing to get here by ferry is quite an amazing trip.
