At the southernmost tip of the peninsula, one can find the beautiful town of Premantura. Premantura features 30 kilometers of coastline and a number of uninhabited coastal islands for you to explore. The history of the area can be traced back to the days of the dinosaurs as a number of important 70 million year old treasures have been found over the years. There is also proof as to the existence of human settlement in the area dating back thousands of years. The biggest landmark in the city which is visible from the sea is the Saint Lovro church which is located in the center of the town.
In the forests and plains surrounding this sleepy little Mediterranean village, one will find almost 600 different plant species of which 20 alone are orchids. On a nearby cliff a lighthouse was built back in 1833 and today still stands as a testament of times gone by.
Several dinosaurs’ skeletal remains have been discovered from the Cretaceous. Humans have been known to have inhabited the region during the 1st century as the Romans called the area Promunturium Polaticum. Long after the end of the Roman Empire, man still called the area where Premantura stands today their home. Several settlements have been discovered which date back more than 4000 years ago.
For those who are looking for adventure there is windsurfing, diving and camping available in the area. You will also find a number of well-worn hiking trails that will lead you to a number of interesting spots. Of course one cannot forget about the sport fishing off the coasts surrounding Premantura. With so much to see and do and such a rich and colorful history that surrounds Premantura, you will never run out of something fun, exciting or romantic to do in this city by the sea.
