Purnuskes – the geographical center of Europe | Lithuania
Have you ever wanted to see the centre of Europe? If you want to go to then you’ll have to travel to Purnuskes. Considered by some to be the true centre of Europe, Purnuskes can be found in Lithuania, about 25km north of Vilnius.
In 1989 the National Institute of Geography calculated that the centre of Europe was just outside the village; a stone memorial now marks that spot.

However, it was later realised that Malta had been forgotten when the National Institute of Geography was calculating where the centre was; now there is a brand new memorial pillar, constructed in 2004, marking the new spot they calculated as being the centre of Europe. The second spot is only about 100 metres away from the first.
There is a tourism information centre near the monument that is open seven days a week. There are also objects in a nearby open air European geographic centre that can be visited at any time of day for free.
If you want to visit the centre of Europe, Purnuskes is an extremely pretty village that will allow you to experience true Lithuania living. Trying the local cuisine and staying in one of the local hotels is an inexpensive and traditional way to spend your trip.
Whilst you’re there and once you’ve seen the monument, you can spend of a lot of enjoyable time walking in the area. The countryside in this area is beautiful and long walks are the perfect way to enjoy it.
