The Rockingham castle is a place that only those who visit can understand the reason why William the Conqueror chose the landscape where he built it. It is simply stunning in every way, inside and out. There is a wonderful view from the castle across the land to the Welland Valley. Besides the castle serving as a fortress it was an important government seat as well. The Great Council events of Rockingham took place inside the castle during the year of 1095.

Several of the Kings that lived during the medieval times visited the Rockingham castle. Richard the Lion Heart is one host that would visit the castle and his brother who was not very well known enjoyed hunting in the nearby forest. One of the main things that was remembered by John was the treasure chest that he left in the Great Hall after his last journey out to the castle’s headquarters. There is a legend that has been told of his jewels being buried somewhere on the grounds of Rockingham castle.

Henry VIII turned the castle over to Edward Watson who is the ancestor of the current occupant of the castle, James Saunders Watson. James changed the medieval fortress into a Tudor house. Many of his portraits hang alongside the hallways on the walls. There is a photo portrait of Mary Boleyn who is the sister of one of Henry’s wives. Queen Elizabeth’s photo portrait hands amongst the various other portraits as well. There are so many different portraits to see in the castle.
