According to a local legend, back in September 16th in the year of 304 A.D., a large underwater earthquake occurred in the area where the costal islands lay today. This earthquake shook the land and covered the streets and mighty palaces in water and when the shaking stopped, the tip of the Rovinj peninsula was divided into a total of 22 islands.

The walls and gates that still sand today, surrounding the city, were built back in the 7th century and have stood the test of time. While there were originally 7 gates into the town, today only 3 of them remain fully intact. In the center of town, one will find the church of Saint Euphemia which is home to a 60-meter tall bell tower that looks out to the sea in all directions.
