Gone are the days when being a solo traveler was a taboo. Today, it’s so commonplace (and even celebrated!) to venture off into the world on your own. If you want to travel but aren’t able to find someone with the same passion as you, don’t worry! Go at it alone and discover all the best the world has to offer.
So if you’re venturing off into the world on your own – have no fear. Here are the safest and friendliest destinations to discover on your own:
Costa Rica
Who doesn’t want to meet the people living in the happiest country in the world? Ranking #1 on the World Happy Index, Costa Rica has plenty to offer solo travelers besides an incredibly welcoming local population. Its amazing natural landscapes are filled with thrilling activities that will make the most adventurous independent travelers quite, well, happy.
Hong Kong, China
Yes, Hong Kong is an enormous city but it’s also filled with loads of quiet escapes perfect for your (much needed) moments of Zen. You will find plenty to do here as a solo traveler from cultural events, to historical sites, beautiful gardens and many outdoors activities!
Ireland
Anyone can make friends over a pint of Guinness, and you’ll find plenty of those pretty much anywhere in Ireland. Add to that the world-famous Irish hospitality and you just know you’ll have no problem making friends while traveling solo on the Emerald Isle.
Iceland
Outdoors activities are what make Iceland such a hub for solo travelers. It also helps that it’s ranked as the safest country in the world. Base yourself in Reykjavik and you’ll easily be able to explore the surrounding natural areas on day trips or venture off on a solo road trip. If you want to make some travel friends, The Laundromat Café in the capital is a great meeting point for independent travelers in Iceland.
Indonesia
As a solo traveler in Indonesia, you have two (excellent) options. You can head to Bali, arguably the most popular backpacker destination worldwide, and meet loads of international travelers just like you. Or you can opt for a quieter retreat: take a 25-minute flight to Lombok and enjoy the same natural beauty with a 1970s Indonesia feel.
Kenya
There’s something about nature that simply brings people together. And it’s hard to find a country that beats Kenya’s incredible Masai Mara Reserve. Check out the bustling capital of Nairobi and its delicious locally-grown coffee and then head into the wild for a real African safari. It will be an adventure you won’t be able to forget soon!
