Located upon a hill which overlooks fertile vineyards and lush olive groves, one can find the small town of Sveti Lovreč. In the distance, on a clear day, you can see the sea.
The city’s name can be dated back to the 6th century where it stems from name of a church which was built in the area. The town itself can be dated back much further; to prehistoric times.

Sveti Lovreč was once the military center of the area and had become known for the 9 towers and the high walls which surrounded the city. At its peak, there were as many as 35 churches located throughout the area, but today most of them have disappeared; existing as mere ruins located in the surrounding countryside. In the center of town, one can find the infamous Pillar of Shame.
Today, the small town of Sveti Lovreč is dominated by the shadow of the St. Martin basilica, which along with its bell tower, is a fortified structure remnant of the rich military heritage of the city. But it is the surrounding fields which add to the enchantment of Sveti Lovreč. The rich fertile soil of the surrounding hillsides is perfect for the growing of grapes as well as olives which has helped the city to become a crucial part of Istria’s wine industry.
