While Algarve may be home to some of the finest beaches in all of Portugal, it is also home to some of the finest examples of architecture in the country. Straddling the river Gilão, you will see the most beautiful example of Roman architecture in the area, a bridge which can be dated back to the days of the great Roman Empire.

Tavira is rich in history and culture that is just beckoning you to experience first-hand. The Tavira Castle dates back to the 13th century when the Moors first landed in Portugal. The beautiful towers of this ancient castle give one an awe-inspiring view of the city and countryside in all directions.

Of course most people don’t come to Tavira for the castle; they come to this beautiful city for the relaxation that can only be found sprawled out on any one of the many fine beaches in the region. Just beyond the Ria Formosa estuary, where you can view migrant birds, you will find the Ilha de Tavira. This is one of the best beaches in Tavira and is also one of the closest to the city’s center. Not too far away you will also be able to find a secluded beach that just beckons you to visit, the Praia do Barril. But for the utmost seclusion, make your way out to the Ilha de Cabanas island.

For those who wish to see some of the rich history in the area, there is the Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo which is 13th century mosque that was destroyed in the 1755 earthquake and rebuilt in the following centuries. It is home to seven knights who belonged to the Order of Sant’Iago. You can also find the Igreja da Misericórdia which is church that was built back in the 16th century.
