The city of Žilina with one of the oldest municipal coat-of-arms in Europe | Slovakia
Located in the northwest of Slovakia, Žilina borders Poland to the north and the Czech Republic to the west. A beautiful range of valleys and mountains, it makes for a truly picturesque tourist destination. The mountain ranges offer plenty of year-round sporting pursuits.

Rich in cultural and historical monuments, Žilina is the fourth-largest city in Slovakia (by population). The most popular monument is probably the Budatin Castle which is based in the north of the town. Built as a guarding castle in the 14th century, the castle is a fantastic sight to see and hosts interesting exhibitions all year round for tourists. It is also home to Považie Museum which displays a tinker trade exhibition.
The town square in Žilina is flanked on all sides by burgher houses, mostly from the 16th century. The square is dominated by the Church of the Holy Trinity which was built around 1400 and simply demands a visit. Another church worth visiting is the 12th century St Stephan’s in the Rudiny borough.
Žilina is well connected to the rest of the country and indeed Europe by train and plane. The backbone of the Slovak rail system runs through Žilina making it a popular destination due to its ease of access.
The city has enjoyed plenty of redevelopment in recent years and because of that, its economy has seen a boost.
