Ready to learn the rules of the road? Navigating the globe while you try to navigate all of the social faux pas that exist within each culture is no easy task. If you want to know how to blend in and appreciate each culture while maximising your time and cash in every destination, there are a few guidelines that you should follow. Here are few things NOT TO DO when you are travelling.
DON’T exchange money at the airport
You will just waste money there. The vast majority of time, your least expensive option is to simply withdraw money from the ATM when you arrive at your destination. Forget about speciality travel cards and cheques. Stick with your good old bank card- and a credit card that gives you bonuses for travelling if you’ve got one!
DON’T take taxis
Nearly every major city on the planet has a cheap and easy shuttle or train that runs from the airport to the city centre. Unless you have a ton of luggage or some very specific need for a taxi, always go for the public transportation route to get out of the airport.
Don’t Dress Inappropriately
Do a little research before you arrive. Will you need to cover your knees and shoulders for religious sites? If you are going to Asia or the Middle East, should you be covering up a bit more in general? This is especially important for women. In some countries, people will truly think you are a prostitute if you show up in short shorts and a tiny t-shirt. You probably won’t like the way you are treated on such occasion.
Don’t Offend people
Likewise, it is important to respect the local culture in general. Social conventions really vary from place to place and it’s good to know them. If you are travelling to a major tourist city like Paris, there isn’t much to learn for the average Western. If you are going to be roaming around rural Mali, it’s good to have an idea of what is appropriate.
Don’t eat at tourist hotspots
Want to get a taste of the local cuisine? Go to where the locals go. Food in touristic areas is typically overpriced and bland.
Don’t pack too much
No matter how long you are staying, you really don’t need more than a week’s worth of clothes. If you are staying longer than that, consider an Airbnb apartment where you can wash clothes.
Don’t get stuck in your ways
Be open to every option. Staying in the same hotel chain in the same part of the world over and over isn’t going to expand your horizons. Try something new then decide what is your true favourite.
