Udon Thani started as a sleepy village until an agreement between the US and Thai governments resulted in the construction of an American military base nearby during the Vietnam War. At that time, Udon Thani flourished as an intercultural hub with GIs and Vietnamese immigrants flocking to its center. Today, Udon (as it is locally known) preserves this diversity and the city is filled with little historical gems to be uncovered.
Ban Chiang
Before the founding of Udon Thani, the region was occupied by prehistoric settlers dating back to some time 2100BC and 200AD. Today, the remnants of this ancient bronze-age civilization are safeguarded at Ban Chiang, an archaeological site located just 35km outside Udon Thani and garnished as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You’ll be able to discover all kinds of ancient artifacts at the museum and explore the surrounding area to your own liking.
Phra Phutthabat Bua Bok
It was here that an 10th century Buddha footprint was unearthed along with several Lanchang-style Buddha images. Later on, in the 1920s, a chedi resembling Phra That Phanom was built on top of it to complete the worshiping site.
Nong Prajak Park
For a breath of fresh air in the heart of the city, nothing beats the perfectly manicured landscapes at Nong Prajak Park. Enjoy a delicious picnic, go for a jog or simply relax amongst nature.
Central Plaza
The largest shopping mall in Northeastern Thailand, Central Plaza an fulfill all your material and entertainment needs. Its six floors are filled with all kinds of shops, a cinema, food court with restaurants serving traditional Thai food, and a bowling alley.
Night Markets
If you want to go a bit more local with your shopping and food choices, Udon daily night markets are where you need to go. There are essentially two spots you can choose to hit up: UD Town, which is technically a shopping mall but it has its own night market which is especially popular on weekends; or Centre Point which follows the more traditional format of a Thai night market with food stalls and makeshift shops.
Phu Phra Baht Historical Park
Some kilometers outside of Udon Thani, you’ll find this fascinating archaeological park filled with sandstone caves, prehistoric cave paintings and ancient caverns. Enclosed by the lush Pa Khuan Nam forest, Phu Phra Baht Historical Park is not only an excellent opportunity to discover prehistoric civilizations but it’s also perfect for nature lovers who want to trek or hike in the area.
Thung Sri Muang Festival
If you happen to be visiting the area in early December, you can’t miss the craziness that ensues for two weeks in Udon Thani. The Thung Sri Muang Festival (which takes place every year between December 1st and 15th) is when local Thais honor the King’s birthday by organizing a host of live music acts, roller coasters and shops.
