Located in the Bangkok Metropolitan Region, Pak Kret makes for an excellent day trip away from the hustle and bustle of Thailand’s cosmopolitan capital. Just 20km away, you will find one of the country’s most authentic towns with its welcoming and serene charm still intact today. Explore the small island on Chao Phraya River or head around the town for some interesting temples and beautiful parks.
Ko Kret
This small island was formed artificially when a canal was excavated to bypass a meander in the Chao Phraya River. Today, seven villages dot the island’s landscape and daily ferries connect it to the mainland. You can tour around the island on a longtail boat or take a ferry to explore Ko Kret’s temples, its main market and various attractions.
Dessert Canal
One of the main attractions on Ko Kret is its Dessert Canal, where locals set up makeshift shops to sell authentic home-made Thai sweets and desserts. At Khlong Khanom Wan, visitors can also learn how to make these traditional Thai delicacies and shop for delicious souvenirs.
Temples
As a traditional Thai town, Pak Kret is home to a number of temples. One that is of particular interest is Wat Ku, a living testament of Mon architecture featuring some interesting murals. Wat Chonprathan Rangsarit is a Buddhist monastery set in beautiful shady grounds that make it perfect for spending the afternoon.
The Horn Museum
For a less traditional attraction, head over to the Horn Museum in Pak Kret. Here, you will be able to admire a great collection of animal horns and antiques dating back as far as 16 million years. The highlight of the museum is undoubtedly its two-meter-long ivory from a mammoth.
Flower Gardens
Pak Kret boasts two exquisite flower gardens where you can spend your lazy sunny afternoons. Both Suan Tan Noi and Suan Thip are poised on the shores of the Chao Phraya River. They are the best excuse to relax and unwind among nature after a busy day of sightseeing. At Suan Thip you will also find a lovely restaurant with river views.
Sri Nakarin Park
Sprawling over 41 acres, Sri Nakarin is a huge public park perfect for bringing along the kids and enjoying a family day. The large pond, multitude of trees, and variety of plants and flowers also make for great photo-ops. You’ll have to drive just a couple kilometers outside of town to find this gem.
