The city of Umag dates back to the days when the Celts walked the region freely. It is said that the name of the city comes from a Celtic word which means that the land is fertile. Many people agree with this because the surrounding terrain around Umag is fertile and covered with some of the greenest plats imaginable. All around the town one will find olive trees and vineyards. So charming is the city that back in the days of Roman rule, a number of exquisite villas were built in and around the city. Today many of these villas still stand as a testament to the quality workmanship of the era.

Since the early Stone Age, the area where Umag stands now has been inhabited. Many artifacts have been uncovered dating back well into the prehistoric times. Stone tools and blades have been found in abundance at many different sites around this ancient town. Many Bronze Age tools have also been uncovered which tells people that the area where Umag stands today has been consistently called home by many civilizations for thousands of years.

The ancestors of today’s residents fought proudly against the Romans until in 177, they lost and the Roman Era began. The Romans brought with them prosperity like none other. The roads and buildings as well as the walls and fortresses that protected the city from invaders have stood the test of time. Today, many of these great treasures can still be seen standing fully intact. In the 10th century, a bridge was built that connected the island to the villages along the coat of the mainland which helped to further the development of the city. By 1991 it became part of modern day Croatia and today offers its visitors many great, unique and ancient attractions.
