Located just outside the popular city of Pula, you will find the quaint fishing village of Vinkuran. This area was well-known even back in the times of the ancient Romans. The view from the village in all directions is nothing less than awe inspiring and will keep you asking for more. The village itself is peaceful and quiet. It is not uncommon to hear the birds chirping in the late afternoons as the cool Mediterranean breezes cool down the land in preparation for the setting of the sun.
You could simply rent a boat and spend all day lazily enjoying the slight breeze in the sheltered bay that has made Vinkuran famous for centuries. Not too far away is the world famous Vinkuran oyster farm which has been around since the times of the ancient Romans.
For the divers, there are many great underwater caves throughout the bay and surrounding waters. In nearby Vintijan, one can find a prehistoric hill fort that has been well-preserved for centuries. There is also the famous quarry which was where Emperor Vespian got all of the stone to build his famous amphitheater. Many beautiful sculptures were made from the stone quarried and in recent digs, a number of partially finished sculptures have been found in and around the site.
The area where Vinkuran lays today has been often abandoned over the centuries as a result of the plague, malaria and frequent attacks throughout the medieval times. Today it is a popular tourist destination which offers a peace and serenity which cannot be found in the other outlining towns surrounding Pula. There are several important archeological sites one can visit around the city and several big festivals and events that occur in Vinkuran every year. Don’t forget that Pula is nearby so if you are looking for some night life, it’s only a short ride to the big city.
