Walmer Castle was built during the time that King Henry VIII reigned and it is considered to be one of the most beautiful and attractive castles in Europe. As many castles, this one was originally designed to act as a defence against intruders, but then it later became a home for Lord Warden of Cinque Ports. For 23 years the Duke of Wellington lived in the castle and on a regular basis Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mother would visit the castle.
There are many highlights that visitors are made aware of upon visiting the castle, including the armchair that Wellington died in, and a pair of boots that he once wore. Tourists will also get to see and observe a room that Queen Mother used whenever she paid visits to the castle.
But this castle is famous mainly for its shape and design. It has 4 semi-circular towers built around circular keep. People also enjoy the scenery whenever they visit the castle. Going on a walk amongst the gardens and seeing some beautiful bird sightings allow people to be able to enjoy the nature and fresh air surrounding the castle. The Deal Castle is located nearby and there is a path that leads to it from the Walmer Castle along the beach front.
The gardens of the Walmer Castle are a successful result of the two Lords that designed it, Earl Granville and William Pitt. Although the garden is frequently hit by the strong winds of the English Channel it is well protected by the castle. There are a variety of shrubs, trees, and flowers that flourish in the garden; making it an even more beautiful and pleasant experience for tourists.
The basic admission for adults is £7.50 and for child £4.50 but if you became a member of English Heritage (for £47) you can visit Walmer Castle and additional over 400 English castles for free.
