After the sparkling festivities of recent years you may think that London would be preparing to take a rest – but you would be very wrong. Throughout winter, London remains a hive of activity and there are many events to amaze and delight even the most monotonous person.

London is a great place to visit, whether you are looking to get involved and experience the seasonal fun or whether you come to simply relax. To get the most out of your trip, here are some fantastic events that are happening in the capital this winter.

1. Ice skating

When it comes to winter there is no better way to make use of the cold weather than gliding around an ice rink while enjoying the architectural scenery. There are several ice rinks in London but for the ultimate experience it is best to head to the Broadgate Ice Rink at Broadgate Arena.

There are many other ice rinks that are open at various times during the year such as Hyde Park, Hampton Court and Canary Wharf. It may be cold outside so arrive wrapped up against the weather and enjoy a spot of ice skating in the beautiful city; you’re sure to leave with a warm feeling.

2. Ice sculpting festival, Canary Wharf

Talking of ice, expert sculptors come from all around the world to Canary Wharf in order to be named the best of the best.

Competitors work under a strict time limit to form intricate and exquisite ice creations and there are even master classes to help you learn the tricks of the trade yourself. These are allocated on a first come first served basis so make sure you get down early!

3. Burns Night

January 25th sees London celebrating the birthday of the great Scottish poet Robert Burns with Burns Night festivities being upheld in various restaurants and bars. With haggis, neeps and tatties in abundance, you are sure to feel the Scottish vibe!

The Scottish icon is celebrated every year and the ceremonial aspect of the proceedings can be very uplifting – especially for Scottish visitors to London. To mark the occasion, Hammersmith Town Hall hosts some traditional Ceilidh dancing from January 18th until 2nd February (although not on all days, so check before you go) which is guaranteed to get you into the Burns spirit.

4. Winter Wanders

See London’s natural splendour by joining in on any of the 30+ free walks taking place over the weekend of January 26th and 27th. The free walks, which are intended to promote walking in London, are perfect for all the family – whether you’re looking for pleasant, leisurely strolls or brisk, energising walks.

Why not even challenge yourself and take part in one of the longer walks? Whatever you choose, you’ll get to take in the beauty of the capital while making new friends and getting some nice fresh air!

5. Chinese New Year

Thousands of people gather together in London’s West End to celebrate the Chinese New Year and the festivities are reported to be the largest outside of Asia.

With a parade to Trafalgar Square and a series of performances, fashion shows, market stalls and groups of people dancing happily in the streets; this can be an exhilarating celebration and should be experienced if possible.

London is filled with many fantastic events in winter and a trip to the capital city may be just the thing to chase away the winter blues and fill you with joy. So, wrap up warm and have an amazing trip!
