Gimino (also Žminj) can be found located in the middle of the Istrian peninsula. This picturesque city is surrounded by an awe inspiring landscape of green fields. The legend that surrounds Gimino is that a long time ago, there were two cities each upon a hill of their own. They once lived in harmony, but after tragedy stuck, the two cities raged a centuries long war until one of them fell. That remaining city was Gimino.
Gimino is an ancient city which has a great number of roads and routes leading to and from. In the center of the city, lies the oldest part of the town in which one can find an old castle, a church and a plethora of medieval walls. For those who want to be taken back a few centuries, Gimino can prove to be an interesting choice of Croatian destinations. The respect for their culture and heritage makes this city a unique place for anyone to visit.
Since the times of the Iron Age, Gimino existed as a fort and the center of the region. While there have always been a number of villages which surround the city, very few of them remain today. With the coming of the Romans, also came better roads and an increased population. It was at the time, one of the most developed cities in all of Istria until the Venetians started attacking the surrounding areas.
While Gimino never fell under Venetian rule, it felt the devastation. It was robbed and exploited for all of its treasures and wealth. However, Gimino survived and by the 16th century, it once again became an economical center in the area. Since there are no wetlands nearby, as the rest of Istria succumbed to cholera and malaria, Gimino continued to prosper. Most of the city was destroyed during WWII as a result of German bombings.
